Local News | HALLOWEEN IN ORIHUELA

Like most things in Spain, what the nation borrows from overseas is usually adjusted and transformed into something of their own, not to mention each region puts its personal stamp on it. The same goes for Halloween, which is clearly not an American affair here on the Costa Blanca. It doesn’t have the pomp and hype as in the US, but rather a traditional feel which sets it apart from most European countries.

Halloween in Spain is a two-day celebration that kicks off on October 31st with Dia de las Brujas (Day of the Witches)

On the 1st of November they celebrate El Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead or All Souls Day) a very important National bank holiday when the Spanish celebrate the life’s of their loved ones that have passed. On this day the whole family come together to celebrate and visit the cemeteries where their deceased are laid to rest taking lots of flowers and gifts to the graves.

Witches night is celebrated on the 31st of October and there are a number of cultural activities to take part in around the area such as medieval markets and evenings of terror for adults in the historic Cities.

One of my favorite places to visit is the City of Orihuela where Wandering souls and the deceased visit the historic centre and old buildings of Orihuela City on the 31st of October beginning at 11pm through till the early hours of the morning.
