Spain News | Anyone For Sardines?

Sardines in the Costa Blanca are at their best from May through to October when the local fisherman catch them daily and they are served up fresh with a cold beer. Who could resist this mid-morning typical Spanish snack (almuerzo) served to you while you are soaking up the views over the Mediterranean sea.

Sardines are not only delicious but are also part of a healthy mediterranean diet, known to help prevent heart disease as well as some cancers they contain calcium and other vital nutrients that are recommended for pregnant women and older adults.

Some Spanish Towns also celebrate an enjoyable fiesta dating back to 1850 The "Entierro de la Sardina" (Burial of the Sardine)

One thing that makes this fiesta unusual is the late date it is held, varying from Town to Town but normally during the months of February, March and April.

One of the Towns that celebrates this traditional (Burial of the Sardine) is Pego. The Entierro de la sardina is a Spanish ceremony that takes place at the end of their local fiestas, consisting of a carnival parade that parodies a funeral procession of giant sardine and culminates with the burning of this symbolic figure on Ash Wednesday.
